Ian Gauthier

Hello and welcome!

I was born and raised in northeast Edmonton and currently call Victoria home. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from the University of Alberta, and worked for several years in youth corrections at the Edmonton Young Offender Centre before starting law school. During a hiatus from my career in corrections, I completed Master of Public Administration at UVic and had the opportunity to work in policy for the Island Health Authority and the Government of Alberta.

I am honored to represent UVic’s law students as president of the Law Students’ Society. The Law program in Victoria is a community like no other, and our mission as your LSS is to provide programs and support for you to make the most of your time here. My goal this year is to ensure you get as much out of law school as I have, and we have an excellent executive team in place to make sure that happens.

It is really easy to get involved on campus. My time here has granted me the opportunity to act as Editor-in-Chief of the UVic Law Journal, serve as General Secretary on the LSS, lead the Outdoor Club, captain the Slaughter Cup law rugby team, organize the annual 1L Community Conference, and of course, attend the numerous social events put on by my amazing colleagues. Wherever your interests lie, you will find a place here at UVic.
When I’m not whiling away my days in the Priestly Library (or more accurately, the Fraser Lounge), you’ll likely find me outdoors, or if the weather isn’t cooperating, playing guitar and harmonica for my friends who are too polite to tell me to take a hike.
If you see me in the halls at Fraser, don’t be a stranger! In my opinion, the single greatest aspect of law school is being surrounded by brilliant, fascinating people and hearing their stories. Never hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or just feel like shooting the breeze and having a few laughs.

I look forward to meeting all of you, and I wish you the best of luck this coming year!
